There, they joined other Vietnamese refugees as labourers on tomato farms where they gained their skills and knowledge to start their own small farm.
The business grew with the family, as two more children, Bao La and Cam, were born in Geraldton. After graduating from university as a geotechnical engineer and accountant respectively, Bao Duy and Bao La returned to the family business.
They bought more land in Walkaway, just outside Geraldton, and now grow a diverse range of crops in greenhouses on both sites, rotating crops to preserve the soil health.
The brothers understand the value of education, learning as much as they can about the horticultural industry so they can make their farms as sustainable as possible, including new developments in water and integrated pest management.
Youngest sibling Cam, a medical scientist, also returned to Geraldton and can be found helping out after work whenever she can, grading tomatoes or packaging cucumbers.
The family loves growing the best of produce for others to enjoy as much as they enjoy their mother’s home-cooked pho.
